Understanding Long-Term Care (LTC)

Some long-term care insurance policies help pay for personal care, companionship and other support at home. Coverage depends on the terms of your individual policy.

Policies differ significantly in what they cover, how much they pay, and when benefits begin. Understanding your policy before you need it, or as soon as you need it, helps you use your benefits effectively.

What is long-term care insurance?

Long-term care insurance is a specialized insurance policy designed to cover the cost of services that help with everyday activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating, using the bathroom, and moving around safely. These are the kinds of support that traditional health insurance and Medicare generally do not cover.

Unlike health insurance, which pays for doctors, hospitals, and medical treatment, long-term care insurance pays for the ongoing personal care and supervision someone needs when they can no longer manage those daily activities on their own. This includes care delivered at home, in an assisted living community, or in a nursing facility.

Most policies are purchased years or even decades before care is needed. Benefits typically begin when the insured person can no longer perform a set number of activities of daily living, or when a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia makes supervision necessary.

Your Policy

Check these 5 things

Long-term care policies differ significantly. Review these key details in your policy documents or with your insurer.

1

Benefit trigger

The conditions that must be met before benefits begin, typically needing help with a set number of daily activities or having a cognitive impairment.

2

Daily or monthly benefit

The maximum amount the policy pays per day or month for covered care.

3

Elimination or waiting period

The number of days you pay out of pocket before benefits begin. Common periods range from 0 to 100 days.

4

Covered home-care services

Whether the policy covers non-medical home care, companionship, and homemaker services, not just facility care.

5

Required claim documentation

The records the insurer needs to process a claim, such as care notes, assessments, and receipts.
